Pumpkin Fun!

To get in the spirit of Halloween, last week was all about PUMPKINS! Here's what we were up to...
Math & Reading Stations
Arranging pumpkins from smallest to largest
Graphing data
Scavenger Hunt: Count the candy corns
Finishing patterns
Roll a word and write it
Spin and count the pumpkins
Sorting pictures by their beginning sound
Reading and writing color words
Spin and write the first letter of the picture

Pumpkin Activities
Mrs. Blakeborough grew pumpkins in her garden this year and was happy to donate some pumpkins to the other kindergarten teachers. I gladly accepted! In science, we used our 5 senses to observe pumpkins.
Here we are passing the pumpkin around and using our sense of touch to describe what the pumpkin FEELS like
Do you hear anything? Hmm...not so much!
Then we got to cut the pumpkin open and dig inside! The kids LOVED this part.
They each got to grab a handful of seeds. I plan on baking them in the oven and having the class taste pumpkin seeds this week.
The icky gooey pulp
We started to make a 5 senses book. We will finish it up next week.
For the taste part, I brought in a pumpkin pie from Cub and let the kids try a small piece! All but 3 really enjoyed it.
Tasting our pumpkin pie!
We discussed the life cycle of a pumpkin and how it first starts off as a little seed, then develops into a sprout, plant, flower, green pumpkin, and lastly an orange pumpkin. Then the cycle starts back all over again.

Other exciting news from our week together
We were awarded the GOLDEN BOOK award from our Media teacher, Mrs. Tinguely. Every couple of weeks, the specialist teachers from P.E., Music, Art, and Media choose a class out of the whole school to be awarded a golden item. Our class was awarded the Golden Book because of their respectful and kind behavior in Media! We are the very FIRST kindergarten class to be awarded this special honor! Way to go--I couldn't be more proud of my students.
In math, we've been reviewing shapes. Here we are singing a shapes song.
We made shape collages in our table groups.
We are working on word families and how we can take word families (different endings of words) and make NEW words by changing the first letter. Last week's word family was -AP.
Another special group of students filled up their sticker chart and chose to eat lunch with me! It' nice to have the company and get to know my students more on a one to one level during this time. :)
Eeek...can you tell my teacher desk needs some cleaning?
Halloween is this Thursday, and so is our Kindergarten Harvest Party! Can't wait for it.
