Spring Fever

Here's what we've been up to...

The class did watercolor painting and made bunnies.

Before spring break, everyone was able to share their shamrock and why they are lucky to have their families.

In social studies and reading, we've been learning about community helpers and using nonfiction books to research more about our dream jobs. We wrote information about what we learned and thought about what kinds of services they provide. For example, mail carriers deliver the mail--that's a service. Firefighters put out fires, chefs make meals, teachers help kids learn, etc. The class is also learning about goods, which are things people use or make. Pencils, envelopes, spoons, hoses: those are goods. One of the expected kindergarten skills that your child needs to know is the difference between a good vs. service.

As a class, we sorted each picture and decided what category it belonged in.
In math, the class is practicing how to create and solve story problems as well as how to their work when getting to the answer. This is something they will continue to do in first grade. I emphasized to my kindergartners that there is more than one right way to get to the answer. You can use your fingers, do it in your head, or draw a picture. One importance of drawing a picture (rather than doing it in your head) is that you are able to double-check your work. It is so easy to be one less or one more off than the correct answer and by drawing a picture, you are able to visually see what you're adding and can point and count it out. Look at all the different ways we showed our work!
